Desperate Housewives:Gangster girl Drea De Matteo shakes up suburbia on Wisteria Lane

Drea de Matteo is the last person you’d expect to see on “Desperate Housewives.”She is quite amaging. You can't understand unless you read it...Please proceed ...
In her attitude and her tough-girl appearance (“I have mean eyebrows,” she quips), the 37-year-old actress screams New Yawk. That was perfect when Drea de Matteo played Adriana LaCerva, the reluctant Mafia stool pigeon on “The Sopranos,” the role that won her a well-deserved Best Supporting Actress Emmy Award in 2004.

After leaving the David Chase drama, Drea de Matteo did a stint on NBC’s ill-conceived “Joey,” as Matt Le Blanc’s sister. Last season, Drea de Matteo played a drug addict on the FX biker drama “Sons of Anarchy.” Despite the Emmy, de Matteo didn’t see much of a future for herself on television.
During pilot season Drea de Matteo found out producers only “wanted Adriana from ‘The Sopranos.’ I was going broke.”

Drea de Matteo moved back to New York. “I was defeated. I thought about getting a bartending job,” she says.

Moreover, Drea de Matteo remembers a time when she considered giving up acting altogether and wished she could just get a gig on a long-running TV show, and specifically mentioned Housewives. Lastly, when her longtime boyfriend, musician Shooter Jennings, proposed to de Matteo recently, the marriage-averse actress replied, "You're not going to make a f---ing Desperate Housewife out of me." As Mary-Alice might say in a ghostly voiceover: The very next day came the call that executive producer Marc Cherry wanted to video-conference with her.

It's an interesting marriage of actor, character and show for sure, in that de Matteo has made her name as the go-to tough-tawkin' broad on The Sopranos and Joey, and Desperate Housewives has a certain suburban gentility to it. "You'd be surprised — she belongs there more than you'd think," de Matteo says, recalling that Cherry told her he was looking for someone to be "the complete opposite of all those girls."
