Lady Gaga and Kanye West cancelled North American Tour

Kanye West and Lady Gaga has been canceled with no reason given just weeks after the rap star came under public fire for humiliating country star Taylor Swift at an awards ceremony.

Concert promoter Live Nation said in a statement on Thursday that the "Fame Kills" tour, that was due to kick off in Phoenix, Arizona on November 10 and run through January, had been canceled with refunds available at the point of sale.

"It was a mutual decision," Lady Gaga said Friday. "Kanye's going to take some time off. But the good news is that I'm going on tour in a few weeks."

Lori Ann Gibson, Gaga's longtime choreographer, claimed on her Twitter feed that "creative differences" between the Gaga and West led to the tour's abrupt demise.

The cancellation, announced Thursday with no official reason given, came just days after the two stars announced the tour dates. The cancellation followed a wave of negative publicity for West in the wake his interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

West came under fire after ambushing country star Swift during her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday, wresting the mic away from her and telling the crowd (and millions of viewers at home) that Beyonce should have won the award for best female video.

He issued two apologies on his blog Monday -- though in the first one he still insisted Beyonce was robbed -- and then joined Leno on his 10 p.m. debut show for a more extensive mea culpa. "I'm just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else's hurt -- and I don't try to justify it because I was just in the wrong. That's period," he says. "But I need to, after this, take some time off and just analyze how I'm going to make it through the rest of this life, how I'm going to improve. Because I am a celebrity, and that's something I have to deal with."

Swift, 19, said she had accepted West's apology in a private telephone call made after she appeared on the ABC TV talk show "The View."

"He was very sincere in his apology and I accepted that apology," Swift told ABC News Radio after receiving the call.But Swift, the biggest-selling artist of 2008 in the United States with more than 4 million albums, said West's actions had shaken her up.

"I'm not going to say I wasn't rattled by it," Taylor said on "The View." "I had to perform live five minutes later so I had to get myself back to the place where I could perform."

West had expressed regret twice on the Web and in a TV appearance on "The Jay Leno Show" for taking the microphone from Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, and saying that R&B star Beyonce should have won Swift's trophy.

His outburst drew boos from the crowd and celebrities and music fans voiced their displeasure with West, a Grammy winner whose hits include "Stronger" and "Heartless." A handful of radio stations in California and Florida said they would stop playing West's music in protest.

President Barack Obama's candid thoughts about Kanye West are provoking a debate over standards of journalism in the Twitter age.

ABC News says it was wrong for its employees to tweet that Obama had called West a "jackass" for the rapper's treatment of country singer Taylor Swift. The network said some of its employees had overheard a conversation between the president and CNBC's John Harwood and didn't realize it was considered off the record.

Even Obama entered the fray, calling West a "jackass" in an off-the-record portion of a political interview on TV given by the president gave this week. The remark was widely circulated by an ABC journalist who posted it on the social networking website Twitter. ABC swiftly apologized.

Sunday's outburst is not the first time West has made headlines for his behavior. In 2005, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans, West said then President George W. Bush did not care about blacks.
